20/100 #100DayChallenge Zentangle Class in The Dalles
Two Zentangles, one from my student, Marsha Morrison (on the right) who did a beautiful job on her first Zentangle, and the other from me (on the left). After doing the Zentangles above, Marsha began a Valentine heart similar to the two I did a couple of days ago. Though we ran out of time to finish, Marsha was able to take the project home to complete it. I really enjoy the small class situation. It is a great way to get to know each other while we work on our art together.
Two other ladies were signed up for the class but had an emergency and couldn't make it as planned. Maybe another time.

18/100 & 19/100 Personal Art and Writing Journals (Journal #2 & 3) Clifford
I started out to make a journal for myself that I could draw or write in. One that started as a children's book, with a cute cover, that concealed the journal inside. I found several kid's books at the thrift store that I liked and selected this one (Clifford's Kitten) as my first. It is bright and fun.
Small 3.5" X 4"Sketch Journal |
I used paper from an art pad to use with pen and marker. I cut the pages to the exact dimensions that matched the size of the front and back covers.
Next I inserted 2 sheets of art paper between each of the story pages that I had cut out of the book and when that was done I punched the pages to accept the spiral that was going to hold it all together.
Then, after removing the binding edge from the front and back covers, I punched them for my new journal covers. I was doing pretty good until I realized I had punched one too many holes in the front cover. You can see that in the picture on the left. Oh, well, too late to change that.
After assembling the book, I ended up with an art journal disguised as a kid's book. The pages flip out of the way when I start drawing, and the covers are solid, so I can put the book on my knee to draw or write at any time, and it will support my work.
After I had cut the art paper to size for the Clifford's Kitty journal, I had 3.5" strips left that were 8' long. I cut them to 4" each and punched and assembled them for a pocket-sized art journal.
I made the covers from the sturdy cardboard that had backed the original art pad and put it all together with a short piece of spiral wire. I decorated the top cover with some Zentangle designs and voila! a tiny journal that I'm already using to keep notes on the Zentangle classes I teach.
17/100 #100DayProject Valentine Card "Be Mine"
One more Valentine Card for my next couple of classes.
The card is laying on a white piece of paper (bad idea) on a yellow tablecloth. The actual edges of the card are where the colored portions end, not the white background paper that the card is laying on. Have I sufficiently confused you yet?

16/100 #100DayProject: Valentine's Day Card in Mixed media and zentangle
I'm teaching a Zentangle class on Saturday at The Dalles Art Center and needed a prototype to show the class the project we will be creating. This is the card that I designed. We will be making 2 different cards that day to take home and give to people you love.
BTW - It's not too late to get into the class. 1/28/2017 from 1 to 3:30.

Family Heirloom Recipe Journal
Family Heirloom Recipe Journal (Journal #1)
It took about four days to sort through boxes of old recipes that I had accumulated over the years and assemble them into the journal you see in the two photos below.
Sometimes these projects take more than a day; but the pleasure I get from creating something that has so much meaning is priceless. Over 75 pages of recipes and this and that which evoke memories and bring joy.

14/100 #100DayChallenge: Scrappy's Quilt
14/100
#100DayChallenge
Scrappy's Quilt
Though I am in the middle of another project which seems to be taking several days, I paused to make this quilt for Scrappy.
Scrappy has a habit of laying on what I am working on; so, I thought: Why not make him his own little quilt, so he will leave my projects alone?
Oh, foolish woman! He has ignored it completely.
But, it still gets entered into my challenge, because it is an art project--even if Scrappy doesn't care for it.

"The Lady of Shallot"
Mixed Media on burlap
This piece was inspired by a call for art inspired by literature by the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. The show isn't for several months; but I wanted to get my idea down before it left me.
It's approximately 16" X 16" and hangs with a dowel and rough brown twine.

Discover Journaling --Journal Cover (Journal #1)
Cover |
Inside |
For this project I chose to make a cover for a journal, which will be an on-going project as I make and decorate the pages to fill it. I used an old cardboard 3-ring binder and covered it with map paper, then assorted decorative paper, finally the words: DISCOVER JOURNALING across the front.
For the pages, I cut assorted colored and patterned cardstock to the size needed to fit the interior, and used a hole punch to prepare the pages to go into the journal. (The cardstock pages are not shown here.) My intention is to decorate and give a theme to each page. The pages will be future projects to be completed sometime in the next 94 days of this challenge.
I'd be interested in hearing your comments on this or any of the projects I have posted, so far. Or on the idea of an 100 Day Challenge in itself. Or any problems you might have with this site.

Silk Bowl
5/100 in my 100 Day Challenge "Silk Bowl"
This is a bowl made entirely from silk I painted for some of my scarves. I decided to see if I could mold the silk and get it to hold it's shape for a bowl. This bowl is approximately 10" or 11" across at the widest point.
I know I said mostly collages for my 100 Day Challenge; but this idea popped into my head the night before last and so I decided to try it out and I'm pleased with how it came out; though I struggled a little in my attempt to stiffen the fabric sufficiently to stand up to gentle use as a decorative bowl.
It is more of a decorative piece than a functional one. You wouldn't want to eat soup out of it. I don't think it could stand up to that much moisture; but I'm working on an idea that might work to solve that problem. We'll see. That'll be another project at another time.

"Rock Art" 4/100
4/100 of 100 Day Challenge
This is called "Rock Art"
Jan 7, 2017
Set of 4 - 4" X 4" Panels
Mixed Media Collage
The 4 panels are meant to be hung together, but don't have to be.
Each collage has a background of various papers and acrylic paint in brown, tan, and red tones with a touch of black. Each panel has a rock that has a petroglyph common to the Columbia River Gorge painted on it and a few small feathers. What you can't see very well in this photo is the additional petroglyph done in a gold gel medium. (Sorry about my cell phone camera, again.)

"River Run"
8" X 10" Mixed Media Collage
Jan 6, 2017
Reminds me of the Gorge, though it's definitely my impression, not an exact rendition.
I am amazed at how each day an idea comes to me before I head into my studio to create. Most times it comes the night before in either a dream or when I am in that "between" state that is neither sleep nor wakefulness. Last night, I got two ideas: one of which I completed today and the other will be for another day.
My project today, which is not quite finished (needs time to dry and get another coat) is not a collage. I'll post it as soon as it is complete. Seems like I will be going in a variety of directions as I follow the ideas I am getting. I can see how doing something for 100 days straight is never boring, always a challenge and definitely an education.
100 Day Challenge 2/100 "Fire in the Sky"
"Fire in the Sky"
16" X 16" Mixed Media Collage
Jan 5, 2017
What with all the snow and having to shovel and plow several times a day, I've gotten behind on posting my 100 Day Challenge in Art; but, never fear, I've been doing the art, I just haven't had time to photograph it and post it daily.
This collage is extremely 3 dimensional. Several areas are raised above the flat surface of the panel and the addition of sparkly stars as well as gold beads that look like amber sticking out at all angles from the picture, give it a definite 3-D look.
I wish I was a better photographer. The boldness of the work just doesn't show up when I use my cell phone to record my work. Oh, well, perhaps I'll get a better camera someday. One can only hope.

100 Day Challenge
I read about #The100DayChallenge today and decided to take the challenge myself.
It involves doing (in this case) art, or writing or whatever you want to do for 100 days and posting daily a picture of your completed project on Instagram.
I, of course, chose art and specifically collage.
Above is #1 of 100 -- 99 to go!
8" X 10"
I challenge you to 100 days of something you love.
Are you up to it?
Email me if you decide to do it, too. We can encourage each other.
